How does our farm work?

We try to emulate a natural ecosystem with plants on the one side and animals on the other. Vegetable production starts by planting cover crops a year and a half before the vegetable seeds are sown. We use a mixed species cover crop that includes grasses, wheat, chenopods and legumes. No Brassicas! Our main vegetable crop is Broccoli and Cauliflower, which is part of the Brassica family. By removing it from the cover crop mix, the populations and life cycles of most soilborne pathogens and nematodes, harmful to Broccoli and Cauliflower, will be reduced. Once the veggies have been harvested, each field will be resown with cover crops that will be rotationally grazed by the cows, sheep and chickens. This promotes the soil microbiota, increasing nutrient release through microbial action. By simulating natural grazing, plant regrowth will be optimized, resulting in better weed suppression, the production of more root exudates and glomalin, resulting in the formation of more stable soil aggregates. According to Wikipedia, “Regenerative agriculture is a conservation and rehabilitation approach to food and farming systems. It focuses on topsoil regeneration, increasing biodiversity, improving the water cycle, enhancing ecosystem services, supporting biosequestration, increasing resilience to climate change, and strengthening the health and vitality of farm soil.” We call it an attempt to sustainably produce food in such a way that the soil is better off after every harvest.
