Pastured Eggs

Our mobile chicken tractor was based on a design pioneered by Joe Salatin and later altered by Richard Perkins. We simply tweaked a proven idea and adapted it to our needs. This is a one-man show. A light weight design, without the need for a floor. The coup is lowered at night to prevent access to predators and raised in the morning to allow the chickens to roam within their 38square meter pen. An electrified fence is used as a primary as a defence against predators. The chickens routinely jump over the fence, but always return to feed and sleep.

The laying box allows the eggs to be harvested without the need for a person to get into the coup. This greatly reduces the size and cost of the coup, as well as resulting in cleaner eggs because the egg rolls away once laid.

Apart from the eggs, the chicken manure also feeds the soil by adding microbial diversity. The manure is also very rich in organic nitrogen, stimulating vegetative plant growth. This will in turn add to the weight gained by the cows and the sheep resulting in delayed, yet real return on investment.

Along with the nitrogen gained from the legume cover crops and the other nutrients captured by the plants, the vegetable crop will also require a reduced amount of synthetic nitrogen to be applied in the following year. This will result in a reduced vegetable production cost and increase in nutrient density and overall health benefits of the Cauliflower and Broccoli.

The average age of eggs bought at a supermarket can range anything between 14 & 45 days. Our eggs are harvested daily and delivered within 7 days. Our freshness is guaranteed.
